Dolcetto

Dolcetto in Italian, translates to “little sweet one”, and is a red wine grape from the Northwest region of Italy. Unlike its name, Dolcetto does not produce sweet wines, but the name rather reflects the low acid nature of the grape. Doletto is a dark skinned grape that is fairly simple to grow and ripens early. While the Dolcetto grape is common in the Italian Monferrato hills and the Piedmont region, it has grown in popularity in Australia and the United States. In Piedmont, Dolcetto is known as Ormeasco, and thus used in the production of Ormeasco di Pornassio. Nebbiolo and Barbera are first and foremost in Piedmont, followed up by the use of Dolcetto. It is typically grown in cooler climates, which helps retain acidity, and in high elevation. Dolcetto will produce a very fruit-forward wine with rich red or purple colors. The palate will be spicy and earthy with flavors of almond or walnut. They have relatively low acidity, and soft tannins, however it can leave you wanting more in terms of aroma. Dolcetto is very easily consumed young and fresh, which gives an advantage over the more popular Nebbiolo grape. Dolcetto can be cellared for up to four years.

Color: deep, bright ruby red with violet hues.
Bouquet: vinous, fruity and fragrant, with notes reminiscent of ripe cherries.

This beautiful block sits on the lower section of the Red Mountain side of the vineyard. Featuring a perfect southwest aspect, it gets the maximum sun exposure for depth and concentration. The land itself is wind-blown loess covering an alluvial floodplain, dotted with indigenous sage.
Winemaker's Notes
Explosively and exotically nuanced aromas of crème de cassis, Himalayan blackberry, black roses, dried violets, pencil shavings, crushed volcanic rock, and liquefied river minerals. While extremely dense and concentrated, this wine has a lot of grace and poise on the palate. The finish of inky deep black fruits, richly refined oak tones, and exotic floral notes, is utterly bewitching. Leave it for 5-7 years if you can or decant well before drinking. This is a 30-year wine in the making.

Lastly, and a wine that stopped me in my tracks, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Block 47 might be the wine of the vintage. Revealing a dense purple hue as well as incredible aromatics of caramelized red and blue fruits, classy oak, lead pencil shavings, and a Latour-like sense of minerality, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, building tannins, a stacked mid-palate, and a great, great finish. I love its balance and purity, but I suspect it’s going to demand bottle age.

Les Noisetiers is a combination of specific lots from within Kistler’s vineyards of designated quality that are situated in far western Sonoma County, near the coast. They began creating Les Noisetiers upon noting that there was an inherent mineral tone which they loved in the lots from their vineyards planted in these coastal sandy Gold Ridge soils.
A classic balance of layered, juicy fruit and mineral backbone. It is delicious wine, with white flowers and stone fruit aromatics leading to a full bodied, juicy core, loaded with flavors of peach, apricots, pineapple and pear.
