Prieto Picudo is a less common and unique red wine grape that is mainly grown in the Northern region of Leon in Spain. Prieto Picudo can be seen in blends with the Mencia grape. It can be compared to Tempranillo wines and is also a component in the production of Rose wines. The name “Prieto Picudo” is derived from the word “Prieto” which means “dark” in Spanish, and the word “Picudo” which means “pointed”. This is directly related to the small and compact bunches that are tapering at the bottom. The grape is sometimes referred to as a pine nut shape. Prieto Picudo produces a concentrated color and powerful aroma. It has moderate acid and tannin with mineral attributes and as well as notes of vanilla and toast. When produced as a Rose, it can give a fruity nose with notes of strawberry and raspberry. It can also give citrus tones like peach and sometimes flowers. It has excellent versatility in the bottle, with the capability to be consumed young, or allowed to age. Prieto Picudo pairs beautifully with seafood and pasta.
